Bird TourIn April 2018 Nick Athanas, Fred Pansa (at the Fredberg), Ashraf Tilburg, 3 American birdwatchers and me broke the record of the highest number of birds seen on a tour in Suriname. We found 409 species in 12 days, 376 have been seen. (Click
here for the species list). The itinerary was almost similar to that of the standard 13 day-tour. To compare my result with that of the big international birding tour operators, we have to add
Feral Pigeon, which they all put on their lists. I refuse to do so. If you put such a species on your list, you might as well go to the zoo.
Highlights of the tour were, the very rare
Pale-bellied Mourner, a species so rare the HBW gives the 4 places where it can be found,
Black-banded Owl,
Crimson Fruitcrow,
White-chested Puffbird, a very clever species, which does not react on playback anymore, like the Pale-bellied mourner. The latter I can still find, but the former has become very difficult. Furthermore we had good views on
Roseate Spoonbills,
Toco Toucan and
White Woodpecker during the Warapa boat-trip, 3 species I usually do not find. Luck plays an important role.
We saw all 6
Jacamar species and this is rather easy. We spotted 17 species of the
Woodpecker family, including the endemic
Arrowhead Piculet and the near-endemic
Blood-colored Woodpecker, 18 parrot species, 35 of the
Antbird family, 25
tanagers, including the rare and beautiful
Blue-backed Tanager, which has been found on all my tours to the Fredberg so far. We found 50
Tyrant Flycatchers, including the near-endemic
White-throated Pewee. The miraculous song of the
Capuchinbird was heard, a species we usually see. The stunning bright orange
Cock-of-the Rock was seen and photographed from a few meters distance in the blind Fred has built. The marvelous Fredberg gave us also 3 very rare species:
Dusky Purpletuft,
Green- and
Glossy-backed Becards. The beautiful song of the
Musician Wren was heard at the Brownsberg and the bird was finally also seen after hard work.
I can imagine that you want to pick up your phone now to call you travel agency, but please contact me first.
